I recently ran a poll across my social media accounts and my e-news list about New Year’s resolutions to find out what people were thinking for 2023. Well, I was surprised/not surprised to learn that 66% said they will NOT be making a resolution for 2023.
I was surprised because a “New Year’s Resolution” is just a goal with a fancy name and we’re constantly setting goals for ourselves.
I was not surprised because in general, we tend to suck at setting goals for ourselves, especially on a personal level.
We tend to suck at setting goals for ourselves, especially when it comes to New Year’s resolutions because they are not:
- Specific: In 2023 I’m going to get healthy!
- Realistic: In 2023 I am going to triple my revenue (without changing my strategy or effort).
- In alignment with what we REALLY want: (I will let you fill in the blank here)
- Supported by our habits: In 2023 I am going to read more (but I won’t spend time every day reading, just you know, whenever I have free time).
However, if we can separate ourselves from those fixed mindsets that we “suck at setting goals” and “New Year’s Resolutions never work,” we can then be open to change and growth. I created this list because I believe that we are all capable of extraordinary things and that comes from goal setting and goal getting. This list will give you an edge in being successful in your New Year’s Resolution and beyond. Really, for the entire year, whenever you set a new goal, this list will help you get there).
And for my fellow goal getters, that 39% of you who WILL be setting a resolution in 2023, this list will only make you more successful.
6 Tips To Making And Keeping Your New Year’s Resolution
- Be SMART about it – Yes, I am going there. You can actually skip every single other tip for creating your 2023 resolution – this is the best one I have. We’ve all likely heard of SMART goals and my friendly reader, a resolution is nothing more than a goal. So, you need to be SMART about it (more about SMART goals here):
- Specific
- Measureable
- Attainable
- Relevant
- Timebound
- Focus on one resolution at a time – Now that you have a specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timebound resolution or 20 that you are considering, narrow it down to 1. Keep those others for when you finish the first one, but focus on one thing at a time to get there fastest.
- Chunk that resolution down – Take that resolution or goal that you have and start chunking it down into smaller steps or goals. Breaking things down into smaller tasks will help you feel some early success too!
- Failing to plan means planning to fail – In other words, make a plan. Now that you have your smaller goals in support of the primary new year’s resolution, make a plan to get there.
- Learn from your mistakes and move on – You may have mistakes and failures along the way. However, failures are only as final as you let them be. The best thing to do for yourself is to learn the lesson and keep going.
- Celebrate all along the way – Remember those smaller goals? Every time you reach one, celebrate it. Have a bump along the road? Celebrate your resilience in getting past it. Celebrate all the things! And when you reach that resolution, celebrate making another one…and then another.
THAT is how you make and keep a new year’s resolution. A growth mindset will help you along the way, but at the end of the day, it depends on you.
New year’s resolution or not, I wish you health, wealth, and extraordinary energy in 2023.
